The Cannaught Place Market of Delhi
Market places are often the best places to get a feel for the people and for the culture of a city. In Delhi, India one of the best is the Cannaught Place Market. The market place is in the center of Delhi, and is fast becoming one of the most popular locations in the city, for tourists and locals as well. There is a plethora of shops and each one is dramatically different than the other. Located in this one spot are the numerous traditional and old shops that have been operated for many years, as well as many modern, chic and trendy boutiques.
One really has to see for their own eyes, the stalls of designer and hip clothing that sit right next to the stalls that specialize in antique furniture and artifacts, or the rows and rows of the exquisitely hand-crafted jewelry. The architecture of the market and of the surrounding Delhi best hotels, is of the Victorian style and that alone is worth the trip to this section of the city. The Victorian influence is a result of the design plan for the market, which is modeled after the Royal Crescent Market in the English city of Bath. The architects who designed the Cannaught Place Market are W. H. Nicholls and Robert T. Russell. They named it after Duke of the city of the same name, Cannaught.
Eight different road will lead you into the market, like the spokes of a bicycle, making this very accessible from all parts of the city. Many people travel into the market to find the hand crafted items, one of the reasons it has become so popular. The quality of the hand-made Indian carpets, the weave of the hand-made scarves and shawls, and the Madhubani paintings that are found here are second to none, and often times people from other parts of the country travel to Delhi in order to purchase these items. Delhi is known for the various market places and the shopping that can be done there, and when making a tour of markets in the city, this is one of the few that should be at the top of your list.
