The Legend of Two Sisters
One of the myths surrounding the islands of Subar Laut and Subar Darat, the sisters islands off the coast of Singapore involves the story of … two sisters. Lina and Minah. Legend has it that these two were inseparable. However, the king met the sisters, and fell in love. He wished to take Lina from the island and make her his wife. As the sisters begged the king not to do so, he picked Lina up, put her on his boat and started to sail away with her. As he did so, a violent storm broke, the sky grew black and the sea grew tumultuous. Minah attempted to follow the boat but was over come by a tidal wave. Lina, over come with fear, escaped her captors and jumped into the sea attempting to save her sister. When the storm had ended the two sisters were searched for, but never found. Thus the two islands were named, and according to legend, every year on the anniversary of their disappearance a storm with break out.
These two islands are just forty miles from Singapore and are the perfect destination for a day trip. They are relatively untouched of development and offer a quiet escape from the busy life in Singapore. However be prepared for a very out-door experience as there are no luxury Singapore hotels on the islands. Just the most basic of amenities, such as simple shelters with fire pits, public out houses and benches. This a campers paradise. There are no people living on the island, just the local band of monkeys that tend to shy away and not botherthose visiting, hiking and camping. The larger island, Subar Laut , does have one paved road, and the huts and other amenities are just a bit more refined, but it is still camping none the less. And for those needing just a bit more luxury, the resort island of Sentosa is close by. These two islands are the perfect tranquil getaway.
