Your Kauai Vacation

It is hard to imagine that one small island can contain so much beauty. This is what is always said of Kauai, one of the most magical destinations in Hawaii. The Napali Coast and the Waimea Canyon are just two of the wonders found here, where there are so many ways to experience nature at her most grand. Take your Hawaii vacation here!

Water fanatics will love kayaking down the Wailua River, paddling by amazing waterfalls amid the verdant landscapes on the east side of the island. With the only navigable rivers in Hawaii, Kauai is a must for those of you who enjoy the tranquility of a day on the water.

On the north shore of the island you will find the Napali coast. Here there are impressive views of the Pacific Ocean along with lush green cliffs and plunging waterfalls. Take the Kalalau Trail that ends at Kalalau Beach and you will indeed be challenged by this often difficult hike that reveals its beautiful reward with the purest sand and the most inviting waters. A trail guide is recommended. And for those of you who wish to take in the amazing scenery without the trek, take a helicopter to view the area from above. For sure this vacation to Hawaii will resonate for years to come.

What is the difference between Wimbledon and the French Open?

Tennis can sometimes be a little confusing. It truly is a world sport with an international following. What really makes each tournament so different? The two grand slam tournaments coming up are London’s Wimbledon and Paris’ French Open. Both are considered specialty events because of the surfaces they are played on.

The French Open is played on a clay court surface. The red clay surface is considered a real European specialty. American tennis players have not fared very well on the surface. Those that do well on the clay like Rafael Nadal etch their name in a storied history of clay court aficionados. Nadal is looking for his fourth clay court title this year. Whereas former world number one Roger Federer has yet to win a French Open title, the only grand slam title that eludes him.

Wimbledon is a grass court surface that has given Americans more success than its clay counterpart. American Wimbledon champions include John McEnroe, Pete Sampras and Jimmy Connors. Sampras won seven Wimbledon titles. Wimbledon Centre Court has become a place for American achievements, and for those who cannot compete on the clay court to thrive.
This season will be yet another to see who can outshine the other on the clay and grass courts.

Science and Astronomy for Students

The city’s library and information services unit hosted an all day Psyched 4 Science event. This was in conjunction with Ivory Park Secondary school and the Johannesburg Planetarium. Students and their parents were invited to participate in the activities of May 13. One of the main purposes of this program was to demonstrate the importance of math and science and also to promote careers in these fields. Activities were provided at the school for students who were unable to go to the Planetarium. Tourists who are staying in Johannesburg boutique hotels also have the opportunity to explore the solar system at this great Planetarium.

One of the activities enjoyed by the students who remained at the school was an interactive game that was geared toward understanding indigenous knowledge systems. There were other games, and indigenous awareness was a main component in them. Some of the games were skill learning based and they played morabaraba and the Omo game to test and improve memory skills. Health and fitness was also on the agenda and gumboot dancing was demonstrated as a fun way to get exercise. African cricket was also played, among a variety of other activities. The Grade 12 students were provided career assessments and offered career counseling.

The astronomy show was held as part of the International Year of Astronomy. The Planetarium divided the students into groups for mini discussions and activities. There was also a presentation from a student who told the audience of peers how stars were created. The students got to look through telescopes and they were able to find Saturn. They were encouraged to find the planets Jupiter and Venus on their own as these planets appear during morning hours. Career options in astronomy were presented to the eager ears that showed great interest. For further questions, the city library and the Planetarium are available with free information.

Somkiat Kaewnok

There is nothing like the feeling of luxury. Phuket Hotels remind the guests that home is where you lay your hat. When you set your hat here, the city opens up and calls you one of the family. A low, rumbling bustle on the streets opens the doors to a wonderful array of urban excitements, and lovely peaceful nights will bring rejuvenation to guests looking for business or indulging in pleasure. Phuket has a long history of visitors, looking for Thailand’s secret heart and hoping to unlock the constantly shifting treasures of the city. Nighttime strolls can turn into sudden enchantments, reveries, or rowdy parties with the locals. They can also lead into metaphorical mental musings, the type which might result in inspirations for paintings.

Local artist Somkiat Kaewnok earns his livelihood from such musings. This young artist is rapidly becoming an international phenomenon on the global art scene, and is a definite local treasure. Showing primarily in Thai galleries and in Bangkok, his work is becoming widely known and recognizable for its unique style. Born in Southern Thailand in 1971, he is still a relative youngster in the art world. But his impression is already deep. His first obsessions, with painting the women from the Padung tribes, remains the primary obsession and subject matter of his work. Their practice of placing metal rings around their necks to extend them fascinated him as a child, and became the primary objects in his work. Through developing his style over the years, the subjects are still women, moved from the intense focus to the women from the Padung tribes to other women on the island, and the style has moved from more realistic impressions to abstracted female figures. But they still have the same iconic long and beautiful necks that are his trademark. The work is entirely otherworldly. The most recent works from Somkiat Kaewnok are a vibrant and colorful testimony to the poetry of a painter’s vision.

The Mankameshwar Temple

There are universities, shopping excursions, and a wonderful mix of the old and the new in Agra, and luxury hotels. Agra hotels are in the center of the activity, offering a sumptuous jumping-off point for tourist adventures, or a central point for a getaway in magnificent surroundings.

Agra is a bustling metropolis, with many attractions for the visitor, not the least of which is the mausoleum the Shah Jahan built to his wife, Mumtaz Mahal, the Taj Mahal. There are temples, mosques, forts, and many other sites and buildings that are remarkable for their historical and religious significance, and which bring millions of tourists every year.

One of the remarkable sites is the Mankameshwar Temple, built on the four corners of Agra City, in honor of Shiva, one of the primary deities. Shiva is often linked with destruction, and is connected with Brahma, the creator, and Vishnu, the preserver, in Hindu culture . Shiva is often depicted in iconography as dancing, and this usually suggests the dance of creation and destruction, which is where Shiva reveals the cycle of life. He is said to hide in the funeral ground, covered with ashes, and also wears snakes for ornaments. He is perhaps the most widely-worshipped deity in the pantheon. Fortunate visitors might be in town during the processions devotees throw in honor of this powerful figure.

On the way to and from this temple, there are countless possibilities for quenching a hearty appetite. Traditional and contemporary Indian cuisine are offered in large doses, and can be had at luxury restaurants, local haunts, as well as street food. Be sure to get some of the local bread, a delicious snack that is folded like a pyramid, covered with silver foil, and sprinkled with coconut. There is also Petha, a sweet candy, as well as the spicy lentil-based Dal Moth.

The lively city has many things to do, and the whole family can enjoy the tours and all the sightseeing offered. The days will be filled with adventure and fun, and for those more prone to insomnia, there is also a host of after-hours activities in Agra, including live entertainment and Internet cafes.

The Respectful Way of Singapore Culture

Singapore has a population that consists of many different cultures and religions.  The ethnic make-up includes those from India, Malaysia, and China.  The religions vary from Muslim to Christian to Hinduism and Buddhism.  There is not just one national language, but four, English, Tamil, Malay and Mandarin.  It is for this reason that the rules of social etiquette are very important.  Singapore is a huge meeting place for international business, with meetings taking place in many of the best Singapore restaurants, and it is always helpful to understand the customs so as to not unknowingly offend those that one comes in contact with.

The family is the key in the society and culture of Singapore.  The good of the whole always outweighs the good of an individual.  This family unit is the center of all social structures, and the harmony, the security and the unity of the group is most important.  The elders of this society are highly respected and treated with reverence.  This is the core of the value system of the entire island.  And with the respect that is given to others, it is very important for the individual to be as well, one who is worthy of that respect.  To be thought of as having good character with ones family and peers is one of the elements of creating a harmonious relationship with those one comes into contact with on a daily basis.

The hierarchical stratus is extremely respected, between children and parents, students and teachers, and employees and employers.  It is always wise to know who is in charge and to treat them with consideration, most certainly if one is not personally a friend.  Introductions of elders is always first, they are give the best food, the best seats and are generally held in high regard.  In 1996, a law passed in Singapore that makes it illegal for the elders of the society and the family to not be taken care of should the need arise.  These are aspects of doing business with Singaporeans and aspects to consider and put into practice when on the island of Singapore.
